The village of Alfarnate is the most northerly in the Axarquia. It lies 49 kilometres from Malaga and 40 kilomertres from Velez-Malaga and stands at a height of 925 metres. The population of Alfarnate is around 1,600. The village stands near to the border with Granada Province. The area is extremely agricultural, the main products being cereals, almonds and olives. Just outside the village is the Venta de Alfarnate, built in 1690, an inn where local bandits took refuge, is now a restaurant of great prestige serving typical dishes of the region.
