Arenas lies in the hills above Velez-Malaga at an altitude of 415 mtres. The village is 44 kilometres from Malaga and has a population of around 1,400 people. The neighbouring countryside contains olives, almonds and vines. The layout of Arenas has conserved a distinctly Moorish atmosphere and close by, on a hill reaching 700 metres above sea level stand the ruins of the Castle of Bentomiz. The village is a ten minute drive from Velez-Malaga.
