Benomacarra, a village of some 3000 inhabitants, is situated 6 kilometres from Vélez-Málaga and just a 15 minute drive from the coast at Torré del Mar. The surrounding areas are rich in agriculture, producing citrus fruits, olives, grapes, avocados and mangos. The layout of the streets of Benamocarra, winding up the hillside, denotes the Moorish origins of the village, which is organised around two squares. Plaza del Calvario and the top of the village and Plaza de la Constitución in which stands the Parish Church of Santa Ana. Close by the church is the house of the composer Eduardo Ocón who was born in Benamocarra in 1833. Today the village still retains its Moorish charms. The quaint little streets of the village contain all the usual modern amenities such as banks, supermarkets, pharmacy, bars and a community swimming pool.
