Competa lies in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara at a height of 635 metres above sea level. Numerous springs and streams bring water to the district from the surrounding mountains. The village is 49 kilometres from Malaga, 26 kilometres from Velez-Malaga and has a population of over 2,500 people. Competa benefits from all the usual facilities required for modern living whilst retaining the charm of its Moorish origins.
