Axarquia – the heart and soul of southern Spain

Axarquia – the heart and soul of southern Spain

If you want to escape the tourist crowds, Axarquia offers stunning scenery, a slower pace of life and a chance to enjoy ´the real Spain´ within easy reach of Malaga Airport.

Boasting the best climate in Europe, Axarquia is situated east of Malaga and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the mountains to the north. The area stretches along the coast and inland where picturesque white villages cling to the hillsides.

Velez-Malaga is the capital of Axarquia and offers a perfect combination of culture and coastline which attract visitors all year round.

A stroll through the old quarter of Velez-Malaga, declared a Site of Historic and Artistic Interest, is a trip back in time. Impressive architectural treasures and longstanding traditions still survive from the past. If you are looking to relax and soak up the sun, take some time out to visit the stunning beaches that surround Velez-Malaga.

Rincon de la Victoria

Rincon de la Victoria dates back to the Palaeolithic Age and remains of walls in the town date back to 1000 BC. The 18th century castle, the Museum of Arts and Traditions and the Archaeological area of Loma-Torre de Benagalbon, including a Roman villa are well worth a visit.

With a backdrop of the Sierra Almijara mountain range, Nerja is now one of the most popular tourist resorts along the coast. The town has resisted too much re-development. Nerja’s famous Balcon de Europa is situated on a rocky promontory and was formerly a fortress designed to keep out British pirates. Today it is the focal point of the town, and offers breath-taking views over the coast.

The incredible Nerja Caves are the third most visited monument in Spain, and are officially recognised for their historical and artistic importance. The caves were discovered by accident in the 1959 by five local lads who were bat-hunting, and date back some five million years. Large chambers are filled with superb rock formations, including the world´s largest stalactite. The caves stretch over 4,000m. Theatre seating has been built into the caverns, and concerts are staged throughout the summer months.

Frigiliana is just 6km north of Nerja, and is one of the most picturesque white towns in Andalusia. Take your time to explore and visit the old Jewish and Moorish districts, rich with Arabic architecture, steep winding streets and whitewashed houses. There are four buses every day from Nerja to Frigiliana. The Festival of the Three Cultures is held for four days at the end of August to celebrate the co-existence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions in the town and includes street performers, tapas tours, fireworks and free live concerts.
