International Schools in Malaga, Rincon de la Victoria and Almuñecar

If you are planning to move to Spain, getting your children into the right school will be one of the most important things to consider before you leave home.

International schools in Spain

Many private schools in Spain are independent and follow the curriculum of another country. In addition to American and British schools, French, German, Swedish and other foreign-language schools can all be found on the Costa del Sol. Under Spanish law, all foreign schools must be approved by their country's embassy in Spain. Most international schools accept children from ages three to 18.

You may prefer to put your children through the same school system they would have at home or if you are only staying in Spain shot-term, you may feel it is not worth putting your child through the strain of having to learn another language.

International schools in Spain usually have smaller classes and a more relaxed regime that you would find in a Spanish state school. They provide a more varied and international approach to sport, culture and art, and a wider choice of academic subjects. Many also provide English-language summer school programmes combining academic lessons with sports, arts and crafts, and other extra-curricular activities.

A usual aim is developing a child as an individual and the encouragement of his or her unique talents, rather than teaching on a production-line system. This is made possible by small classes which allow teachers to provide pupils with individually-tailored lessons and tuition. The results are self-evident with examination pass rates high, and private secondary schools have an exceptional university placement rate.

International schools vary hugely, however, and some international schools take pupils from Spain as well as expats. Spain has one of the largest number of 'foreign' schools of any European country, meaning schools where the majority of pupils are from the host nation, as many Spanish seek the prestige of sending their child to an English-speaking or other foreign-language school.

The eastern end of the Costa del Sol, including Malaga, Rincon de la Victoria and Almuñecar offers a choice of international schools.

International school fees in southern Spain

Fees at subsidised Spanish schools are around EUR 700 a year, whereas fees at independent foreign schools range from around EUR 4,000 a year to well over EUR 8,000 a year at senior schools (particularly for boarders).

Fees usually do not include registration, books, materials, laundry, insurance, extra-curricular activities, excursions, meals and transport (most private schools provide school buses). As an example, you may need to budget around EUR 800 a term for meals and other extras.

Some schools award scholarships and offer grants to help parents pay fees, depending on their financial circumstances.

International schools in Malaga, Rincon de la Victoria and Almunecar include:

The International School of Malaga

This school is located just west of Malaga city and accepts pupils of all nationalities. Situated next to the Club Deportivo Calderon, sporting facilities include football, padel tennis and basketball. The main building lies on a 5,000m2 site. Newcomers to Spain are given special help and support in Spanish although the curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum.

Academic Facilities include science laboratory, library with CD-ROM stations, art room, and computers in classrooms. All students are served with lunch. Buses cover most of the residential areas of Málaga and the coast. All students wear the approved school uniform.

The Colegio Rincon Añoreta, Rincon de la Victoria

The school caters for pupils aged two to 16 and teaches Bachillerato (Spanish university preparatory courses) to 16 to18 year-olds. This is a bilingual (Spanish-English) school, ruled by the Spanish Ministry of Education. Hours are from 9.00am to 5.30pm.

Almuñecar International School

Almuñécar lies in the province of Granada, and has around 27,700 citizens. The Almuñecar International School is an independent school for children aged 3 to 19 years old. Founded in 1989, and owned by a consortium of parents on a 'not for profit' basis, the school was established to serve Spanish and expatriate families looking for an affordable British style education for their children.

The catchment area includes Torrox, Nerja, Motril and Granada. AIS provides all students with a caring and inspiring academic atmosphere and is a member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS).

Pupils study the full range of National Curriculum subjects as well as Spanish and social studies in accordance with the Spanish curriculum.

Courses lead to IGCSE and A level examinations and students are prepared for university entry abroad or here in Spain.
