Walking in the Axarquia, southern Spain

Walking in the Axarquia, southern Spain

Andalucia is one of the best places in Europe for rural tourism and the Axarquia offers a wide choice of excellent walks.

East of Malaga, the Axarquia is situated within the Sierras of Tejeda and Almijara national parks and is much less developed that the west. Walks vary from ‘easy’ to ‘challenging’ with the highest point being Maroma, at 2,069 metres. The spectacular walks cater for all levels of fitness and ability.

The capital of Axarquia is Velez-Malaga and the Vélez, Algarrobo and Torrox Rivers all run through the region.  Axarquia is an Arabic word meaning ‘East.’ Axarquia with its sub-tropical temperatures is known to have the best climate in Europe. With a population of approximately 55,000, Velez-Malaga is not overdeveloped and is a great place to explore on foot.

Artefacts dating back from 30,000 BC to the Bronze Age can be seen in underground caves in Nerja and Rincon de la Victoria.

From November to May skiing can be enjoyed in the nearby Sierra Nevada, which is under two hours away by car.

Stunning landscapes stretch from the coast to the mountains and the whole region is one of the most scenic in Europe. High summits, deep ravines and rivers all feature.

Most of the mountain walks start from the villages of Canillas de Acetuno, Sedella, Salares, Competa, Frigiliana, Maro and Otivar. If you are planning a walking trip, avoid July and August when temperatures can reach 40C. The end of September through to the end of May are the best times to enjoy the Axarquia on foot, although you can expect some rain between November and February.

Although rural tourism exists in the region, the Axarquia retains much of its original charm and offers picturesque white villages which are a pleasure to explore.

Some of the best walks in the Axarquia include:

Aroyo Sanguino & Barranco de la Coladilla in Nerja and Maro (13km),  Cerro de Pinto in Frigiliana (6.5km),  Cortijo del Iman in Pinarillo (14km), Loma de Viboras in Alcaucin, Rio Torrox & La Rabita (16km), El Fuerte, Frigiliana (8km), Maroma Vistas, Canillas de Aceituno (12km), Rio Seco, Nerja & Maro (5km), Torrox Pueblo and Costa (9km), Venta Pradillos, Competa (18km), El Pino & Puerto de Torrox (13km).

A province in Malaga, Rincón de la Victoria lies on the coast, just 10km to the east of Malaga.  Situated in the southwest of the Axarquia region, the town has a population of 18,000 which increases to over 40,000 in the height of summer. Formerly a fishing village with beaches stretching 9km, Rincón de la Victoria has seen a big increase in tourism because of its proximity to Malaga city and the airport.

Take your time to explore the region around Rincón de la Victoria, including the beautiful villages and towns of Montejaque,  Benamocarra, Benaoján, Nerja, Parauta, Periana, Pujerra, Riogordo, Villanueva del Trabuco and Salares.
