Lake Vinuela and the Axarquia
The stunning main-made reservoir, Lake Vinuela, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the province of Malaga and offers visitors a wide choice of things to see and do, including boating, horse-riding, hang gliding and water sports.
Walking tours around Lake Vinuela, in the verdant Axarquia region of southern Spain, are popular with all ages and offer a choice of hikes, strolls and climbs with beautiful landscapes and scenic views.
Velez Malaga and the Axarquia in general still retains much of its original charm but has also taken on something of an international flavour with many ex-pats from northern Europe and beyond deciding to settle here.
Dating back to the 17th century, the charming village of La Vinuela (Little Vineyard) is situated 45 kilometres from Malaga and 19 kilometres from the coastal town of Torre del Mar, with all of the Costa del Sol resorts within easy reach by car.
The scenic village is on the Olive Oil and Mountain Route which winds through villages, olive groves and mountain ranges. From the village you can see right across to the Sierra Tejeda and the Boquete de Zafarraya Mountains.
Vinuela is a great spot to visit if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busier Costa del Sol tourist resorts and spend some tranquil time in the countryside, relax and recharge your batteries.
Restaurants in the region include: Indian, Chinese, Thai, French, plus of course a wide choice of Spanish restaurants. Restaurant prices are very low in this part of Spain when compared with the cities of northern Europe and the standard is generally good.
Local food specialities in the Axarquia region include: Ajoblanco con Uvas (Garlic Soup with Grapes), Chota a la Cazadora (Kid in Almond Sauce), Cordero Asado al Horno (Roast Marinated Lamb) and sweet Churros, fried dough sticks with hot chocolate.
The village of La Vinuela started off as an Inn on a royal road between Velez and Granada, and from there it grew. The inn still exists on the main street of La Vinuela.
There are some interesting monuments around town, including the San Josñe Church, the hermitage of La Virgen de las Angustias and the Torre de la Atalaya (watchtower). Each September La Vinuela holds a two-day festival, the Festival de la Pasa, to celebrate the raisin harvest in the local area.
With an average of around 2,800 hours of annual sunshine, La Vinuela enjoys hot summers and mild winters. Sports fans can enjoy two nearby golf courses, Baviera in Caleta de Velez and Anoreta in Rincon de la Victoria.
