A vibrant market town, Velez-Malaga lies 5km inland from Torre del Mar and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Known as Velez, the town is famous for its agriculture, vineyards and olive oil. Ceramics are also hand-produced in Velez and the weekly market is home to many stalls selling the brightly-coloured pottery, gifts, leather goods and clothing.
Visit the 13th century Moorish Castle and enjoy breath-taking views over the countryside. Visit the old town, Arrabal de San Sebastian, a picturesque area of narrow, winding streets. Lake Vinuela is a man-made lake named after the Andalucian village of the same name. The lake is close to the point where the rivers Velez, Guaro and Seco were damned to create this stunning reservoir with a capacity for 170,000 cubic metres of water.
Visitors can drive almost the whole circumference of the lakes and will find a choice of picnic spots and barbecue areas along the way.
Before the dam was built, many artefacts from the Roman times were found here – many of which can be viewed in the Museum of Malaga.
The lake is 15 minutes inland from the Coastal town of Torre del Mar on the Eastern Costa del Sol. It is well stocked with fish and in particular, carp. A licence to fish is necessary but is easily and inexpensively obtained. Swimming and non-motorized water sports are permitted.
