Axarquia and Malaga Wines
The Axarquia and Malaga may be better known for their stunning landscapes, white villages and coastal resorts along the Costa del Sol, but they are also unmissable destinations for wine lovers.
A wide choice of wineries are located around the Axarquia where excellent wines are produced and exported. Many of them you can visit, take a guided tour and sample the wines on offer, all within easy reach of the main Axarquia towns.
Traditional production processes still exist in many of the vineyards with manual harvesting methods still in use. Axarquia wines are produced under the Malaga and Sierras de Malaga denominacion. The rugged terrain and steep slopes of the Axarquia vineyards cultivate Moscatel and Rome grape varieties, which are native to the area. The grape harvest in Axarquia is one of the earliest in Europe and is celebrated throughout the region with village festivals.
Most of the wines harvested here are sweet and white, although some reds are also produced.
Inland Axarquia properties for sale attract ex-pats who want to enjoy ‘real Spain’ within easy reach of the coastal resorts.
Some of the best wineries to visit include Bodegas Jorge Ordonez in Velez-Malaga which hosts vineyard visits and wine tastings. Bodega Dimobe in Moclinejo is another of the better known wineries and is divided into three rooms, showing how the wine process has worked in the area from 1927 to present.
Sedella Vinos is a small winery in a village of the same name which boasts a stunning setting. Sample artisan and natural wines in one of the most spectacular parts of the Axarquia.
Bodegas Bengomiz offers visits and tastings plus a full lunch and wine cellar excursion. Sample five dishes accompanied by excellent wines produced at the bodega.
If you are planning to visit several wine routes, Competa has an excellent wine tradition. The Bodegas Almijara offers guided tours where you can learn all about the winemaking process while sampling the wines.
If you are based in Nerja, you will be within easy reach of the wineries and can book excursions directly from a tourist information office or from your accommodation.
Nerja properties for sale are popular with ex-pats who want to buy a holiday home on the Costa del Sol.
Nerja itself is worth a visit from other parts of the Axarquia and boasts the Balcón de Europa, with spectacular views over the coast and the Mediterranean Sea. The Nerja Caves nearby play host to 42,000-year-old paintings and the world’s largest stalagmite.
Nerja can be reached on the N-340 coastal highway, approximately 55km from Malaga. Comfortable, air-conditioned buses travel daily from Malaga bus station to Nerja, from 7 am to 11 pm. The journey takes little over an hour. Why not combine your stay in Nerja with a wine tour to nearby bodegas and vineyards, including tastings and transport?
