The Axarquia – the most stunning part of Andalucia

If you are planning to visit inland Andalucia, the Axarquia offers stunning white villages and breath-taking countryside.

Enjoy the tranquility of the Axarquia while still being within easy reach of the coastal villages of the Costa del Sol, including Nerja and Velez-Malaga.

Axarquia properties for sale or rent are ideal as permanent residences or holiday homes.

Situated just east of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, the Axarquia area boasts a backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which attract skiers from all over Europe from November to April. Stunning country villages nestle on the hillsides and the Axarquia also boasts over 320 average days of sunshine each year.

During the past ten years, the Axarquia has become one of the most sought after locations for ex-pats who are looking for properties for sale in rural Andalucia, away from the busier coastal resorts.

This charming region has a unique feel about it, very different from the area west of Malaga and offers a quieter, more relaxed and traditional Spanish lifestyle.

Explore the historic town of Antequera which can be explored on foot, and is home to caves dating back 6,000 years, including the Cuevas de Menga and Viera, which are situated on the Granada road. Every ruler of Andalucia and Antequera has left their mark on the town, from the Moors to the Christians and the Romans, and the town is just a 90 minute drive from Marbella.

La Real Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor is a renaissance building with a large, attractive facade made famous during the days of Roman rule. El Arco de los Gigantes was built in 1585, and offers a beautiful view of the town. La Plaza de Santiago and the church of Santa Maria de Jesus are also well worth visiting, as is the town´s museum, which is home to many artefacts.

If you are a lover of the countryside, visit Antequera’s stunning Torcal Park, which is located just 15km to the south of the town. Incredible images are conjured up by an extraordinary landscape, made up of limestone which has been shaped by wind and water. Perfect for rock-climbers or holidaymakers who want to enjoy the views and take it easy, Antequera is a revelation.

The cuisine in Antequera is made up of local fresh ingredients. Porra Antequerana is a speciality which combines bread, tomatoes and peppers similar to a thick, chilled gazpacho soup. Also famous for its home-baked molletes, which are flat bread rolls, sliced and filled with local serrano ham, tomatoes and garlic.

Properties for sale in the Axarquia include village houses, townhouses, villas, apartments and fincas, popular with ex-pats who want to experience the ‘real Spain’ within easy reach of the coast.
