The Axarquia and Malaga may be better known for their stunning landscapes, white villages and coastal resorts along the Costa del Sol, but they are also unmissable destinations for wine lovers.

A wide choice of wineries are located around the Axarquia where excellent wines are produced and exported. Many of them you can visit, take a guided tour and sample the wines on offer, all within easy reach of the main Axarquia towns.

Traditional production processes still exist in many of the vineyards with manual harvesting methods still in use. Axarquia wines are produced under the Malaga and Sierras de Malaga denominacion. The rugged terrain and steep slopes of the Axarquia vineyards cultivate Moscatel and Rome grape varieties native to the area. The grape harvest in the Axarquia is one of the earliest in Europe and is celebrated throughout the region with village festivals.

Most of the wines harvested here are sweet and white, although some reds are also produced.

Some of the best wineries to visit include Bodegas Jorge Ordonez in VelezMalaga which hosts vineyard visits and wine tastings. Bodega Dimobe in Moclinejo is another of the better known wineries and is divided into three rooms, showing how the wine process has worked in the area from 1927 to present.

Sedella Vinos is a small winery in a village of the same name. Sample artisan and natural wines in one of the most spectacular parts of the Axarquia.

Bodegas Bengomiz offers visits and tastings plus a full lunch and wine cellar excursion. Sample five dishes accompanied by excellent wines produced at the bodega.

If you are planning to visit several wine routes, Competa has an excellent wine tradition. The Bodegas Almijara offers guided tours where you can learn all about the winemaking process while sampling the wines.

If you are based in Nerja, you will be within easy reach of the wineries and can book excursions directly from a tourist information office or from your accommodation.
